As climate changes, watersheds along the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) are experiencing some of the highest rates of glacier melting on Earth, causing significant societal and ecological impacts on the structure and productivity of marine ecosystems, safety hazards related to glaciers, hydropower generation, and sea-level rise. This project will bring together scientists and land and resource managers at a workshop to establish a cross-disciplinary framework for developing new tools to monitor and anticipate future changes in glacier runoff along the GOA. This workshop will result in a more coordinated strategy for studying glacier change in Alaska and addressing key outstanding questions related to glacier change. This two day workshop at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center in Juneau, Alaska explored the impacts of glacier change in the coastal temperate rainforest. The workshop had several presentations that highlighted the state of the science from various components of the glacier system, including glacier change, hydrology, ocean interactions, biology, and biogeochemistry. Working groups and discussions explored system interactions, informtion deficits, and resource management implications. The two-day workshop was concluded with two public presentations in Juneau, Alaska. Read more about Juneau Glacier Workshop

Date:
Thursday, April 28, 2011 (All day) to Friday, April 29, 2011 (All day)

One of the first endeavors of the Alaska CSC was to connect the climate science research community with stakeholders to advance regional climate understanding and research in Alaska. The result was a region-specific Climate Downscaling Workshop held on 28-29 April 2011 in Anchorage, Alaska. The workshop provided a forum for scientists and user groups to:

  1. Explore state-of-the-art techniques and methodologies for downscaling climate data;
  2. Understand current science capacities in Alaska and learn about new initiatives and future capacity in the state;
  3. Set an agenda to address Alaska’s science and management needs that provides capacity-building recommendations.

This workshop identified several important recommendations, including the need for better understanding of the science and application of downscaling and a need to develop downscaling best practices. Read more about Alaska Climate Downscaling Workshop

Webinar
Date:
Thursday, April 25, 2013 - 11:30 to 12:30

On Thursday, April 25 at 3:30 PM Eastern, Shad O'Neel, USGS Alaska Science Center, and Eran Hood, University of Alaska Southeast, will conduct a presentation titled "From Icefield to Ocean: Impacts of Glacier Change in Alaska".

Webinar Description:

Mountains ringing the Gulf of Alaska host large maritime glaciers that are experiencing some of the highest rates of volume loss on Earth. These rapidly changing glaciers demonstrate tight physical and ecological linkages with downstream ecosystems that bridge the icefield-to-ocean continuum. This talk will highlight recent efforts of an Alaska Climate Science Center supported research project to better understand these linkages, including how glaciers influence hydrology and oceanography as well as the biogeochemistry and ecology of freshwater and near-shore marine ecosystems that receive glacial runoff. We will also discuss a framework for developing an interdisciplinary research program related to glacier change that will inform future management efforts in the diverse and productive coastal ecosystems along the Gulf of Alaska.
